It has been several years since the release of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter and it’s subsequent Film. The book was a landmark historical fantasy novel that was original and fun. It is in the spirit of steampunk and belongs in the conversation while lacking having no steampunk style technology(airships and automaton). It is a brilliant period piece of alternate history. It contains a wonderful blend of fantasy and history that will give the reader an excellent understanding of the life of Abraham Lincoln.
The reader will learn about Abraham Lincoln’s life and the events that lead him to the white. It is historically accurate minus his vampire slaying activities. Though it’s cliche to say the book is far superior to the movie because the ending is quite different as Lincoln becomes a vampire and takes revenge on John Wilkes Booth.
The movie is an extremely simplified version of the book that removes the controversial elements. Elements like that the Civil war was fought because the Vampires were using the south and slavery to have easy access to food.
Also in the movie unlike in the book Lincoln doesn’t come back at the end of the story as a vampire to kill John Wilkes Booth. In hindsight this should have been in the movie and would have made it infinitely more shocking.
The lack of the more controversial and absorbed elements really led the movie to being rather forgettable.
A fun part of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter is when Edgar Allan Poe makes an appearance. This is very stylized and make in as a young Lincoln mistakes him for a vampire.
Abraham Lincoln can be considered American steampunk a fun and original read that isn’t well represented by the film.
